Do you like what you do? Music production is your favourite hobby, right? If not, then why do you even attempt to create music? Music is not just a typical day job that you do just to get paid on Friday so you can pay the bills. In order to get the best out of music, then you need to like what you do and you should always feel excitement and adrenaline when you’re making a beat. It’s similar when you listen to a song you really like too. But, why do we feel this excitement when making music? It’s all part of human nature and enjoyment. It is easy to notice how different people react when it comes to subjects that they aren't interested in or tasks they don’t like to participate in. Remember, a hobby is something you enjoy and not something you do for the sake of an essential outcome. For example, one individual may feel not feel any interest and may be bored when playing a game of basketball, but the another individual will have the stamina, charisma and energy to play simply because it’s what that person enjoys. The same applies to music producers when making a new beat. You need to be aware of your zone. You will have days where you repeat to yourself, “I can’t be bothered” and most days you will repeat “YEAH, I’M GONNA MAKE A HIT!” This is not just one thing you should be aware of in order to find your zone and I am not just talking about the first-resort solution I explained in the previous paragraph about enjoying your hobby. The other solution is to actually start with your favourite and most creative part of a song that you prefer. When I am lacking in creativity, I usually start with the melody or the harmony, then I put together the rest of the track. It all depends on personal preference. But, if you still can’t seem to make anything interesting then I suggest listening to other producers or watch some online beat-making videos. There are plenty on YouTube for you to get inspiration from including my own videos which you can watch here. Usually, watching others make a beat can give you a boost and some inspiration. Remember, you need to block out negativity and avoid distractions in order to stay in the zone of making a new beat. Don't go off track. Enjoy it! D.J.
