A stage name is extremely important when preparing to brand your music. Without a significant name, your target audience may not be able to identify your music which means you can easily be forgotten (not good). There is a lot to consider before launching your songs or beats which is mentioned in the article How to Brand Your Music which also briefly includes stage name creation. If you are finding it difficult to create a name for you music whether you are a DJ, Rap Artist, Singer, Band or Producer – this article will guide you to choose a suitable stage name.

Describe Yourself

How will the name match your personality, interests or appearance? Start thinking about what will fit well with yourself or the whole band. Do you have a certain hobby or interest that you can attach to your stage name? What about your looks - Are you tall or short?

Don’t Be Too Plain

Try not to use your initials unless they really sound cool together. If you want to fit a colour into your stage name, then instead of going with “Red Production”, why don’t you make it sound more attractive like “Red Flamez Production”?

Make It Memorable

A unique name is totally important so I would avoid basic and common stage names that are being used by loads of other people in the music industry. If you have a classy or rare second name then use that as your stage name.

Don’t Make it Hard To Spell or Say

If it is hard to spell, then how are potential fans going to find you in directories or online? It will save them a lot of time if they can easily find you within seconds otherwise they will just change their mind about checking your music, so you will then lose a fan.

List As Many Ideas as Possible

Get it down on paper so you do not forget. This makes it easier for you to look through them all and decide which stage name you want to have. You could even ask some friends or acquaintances about their opinions.

Remember, a stage name may have to stick with you for your whole career unless you plan to change it before you get a decent fan base but I do not recommend that as it can make things too awkward. Choose wisely and try to think as many stage names possible that are relevant and unique!
